Fall is the season of apples, and nothing goes better with this sweet and crisp fruit than a batch of Homemade Salted Caramel Dipping Sauce. Caramel is one of those delicious sauces that can feel intimidating and time consuming at first but is actually easy to whip up in no time at all. So get ready to dip, pour, or drizzle this tasty sauce over your next snack and turn it into an extra special treat.

The Basics

The basic components of a caramel sauce are some form of sugar, fat, liquid, flavoring (if you prefer), heat, and chilling.

We have experimented with various kinds of sugars (brown, granulated, and bakers), along with the fats (butter, margarine, and Crisco) and the liquids (water, milk, coconut, whipping cream, and half-and-half). Out of these trials, we have two winner combinations in which our families deemed a tie.

To turn your ingredients into the magical sauce, place the sugar, fat, and liquid in a sauce pot and cook over medium heat for 5 – 8 minutes., stirring the whole time. The mixture should liquefy and start to bubble.

Add your flavorings and continue to cook for an additional minute or two. The sauce should thicken and be golden brown in color.

Make this caramel and use it as an easy midweek dessert. Try dipping apples, bananas, pears, and all those tidbits of crackers, cookies, and marshmallows in your pantry that need to be eaten before they get stale.

The great thing about caramel sauce is that most of us have ingredients that will work already at home.

Take a chance and experiment. You may surprise yourself and come up with a new favorite sauce.

Just remember to take notes so you can repeat it in the future.
