Halloween is here! These Disney inspired candied apples are fun for the whole family to make and have a delicious reward when you are done. So grab your favorite Mickey ears, a pumpkin, and some apples to create your very own Main Street Pumpkin Festival at home with this Mickey Jack-O-Lantern apple.
The first step is to prep the apples. Push the candy stick into the core from the top down. If it is too tough we suggest making a hole with a chopstick, skewer, or something similar.
Next, prepare to melt the Orange Wilton Candy Melts. For small batches and working with children, we suggest using the Wilton Candy Melts Pot. It provides even low heat and the outside is not hot to the touch. Follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines.
For larger batches and a pouring consistency, we suggest the microwave and/or double boiler. We suggest 10-15 seconds in the microwave and finish off on the double boiler till you get the consistency you want. Stir continuously to smooth and prevent burning
You can scoop and pour the mixture over the apple, allowing the candy coating to drip down with an even coating. If need be, use a silicone or icing spatula to spread an even coating and fill in thin spots. Rest the coated apple on parchment to allow the candy melt coating to cool and harden.
Place the provided template under a piece of parchment and use your piping bag to trace.
Scrap the remaining orange candy melt into a piping bag to draw Mickey's ears which will be placed on top of the apple. Start with tracing the circular line then fill in a swirling pattern. Build up to at least a ¼ inch thickness. Let cool and harden. Repeat and let cool.
Melt a smaller quantity of the Yellow Wilton Candy Melts using any of the methods previously mentioned. Pour the melted candy coating into a piping bag.
Cut the smallest tip possible on your piping bag. Test the size first before cutting a larger opening. We also suggest practicing the face on a piece of parchment before application to the candied apple.
Using the template, outline then fill in Mickey's eyes, nose, and mouth. These pieces will be adhered to the front of the apple to create Mickey's friendly face. Take the remaining yellow candy melt and draw a swirl on each ear.
Note: Wilton disposable piping bags are microwavable. Candy melts can be placed directly inside the disposable piping bag. Microwave 10-15 seconds at a time, massaging the bag between heating. This technique also works when using the piping bag over a period of time in which the contents may harden.
Finally, melt a small quantity of the Vibrant Green Wilton candy melt using any of the methods previously mentioned. Pour the melted candy coating into a piping bag.
Freeform an outline of a 2-3 inch leaf. Fill in and build up to a ¼ inch thickness. Let cool and harden. The leaf will lay on top of the apple.
When all components are fully cooled and harden it's time for assembly.
Reheat the orange, yellow, and Vibrant green candy melt piping bags, following previous instructions.
Start with Mickey's face. Gently pipe a yellow dot on the back of one eye and place it on the front of the apple. Hold for 15 seconds. The small amount of candy melt hardens quickly keeping it in place. Repeat process with remaining eye, nose, and mouth.
Next, take an ear and add a bead of orange candy melt to the bottom of the ear. Place it on the apple and hold for 30 seconds. Add another bead around the base securing the ear in place. Repeat on the other side.
Lastly, take your leaf and add a bead of vibrant green candy melt to the back and lay on top of the apple,, holding it in place for 30 seconds. Freehand curly vines around the leaf for the finishing touch.
Allow all components to harden before handling the apple.
Once solidified, the apple is ready to display proudly as a lovely addition to your Disney Halloween decor or table. And when you are done showcasing your creation don't forget to enjoy your tasty treat making it a celebration of Halloween - Disneyland style.
